Sayın Valim, Sayın Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanım, Sayın milletvekillerim, Protokolümüzün değerli üyeleri

Medeniyet, göstergelere ve gösterge sistemleri üzerine inşa edilmiştir. İnsan zihni göstergelerin işleyişinden ayrılamaz. Bu gerçek; Aristo’dan St. Augustin’e, İbn-i Sina’dan, John Locke’e pek çok büyük âlimin dikkatini çekmiştir. Medeniyetin göstergelere bağlı olduğu düşüncesi, geçtiğimiz yüzyılda yeni bir boyut kazanmıştır. Bu dönemde hem dilbilimde hem de felsefe ve mantıkta önemli ilerlemeler meydana gelmiştir. Beşeri bilimlerdeki bu gelişmeler, 20. Yüzyılda yeni bir bilimin doğmasına vesile olmuştur. Bu bilim, göstergebilim’dir.

Göstergebilim; işaretlerin üretilmesi, yorumlanması ve işaretleri anlama ve yorumlama süreçlerinin sistematik bir şekilde incelenmesi ile ilgili bütün faktörleri inceleyen bir bilimdir. Göstergebilimin temeli Antik çağ metinlerine kadar iner. Fakat modern göstergebilim, varlığını biri Avrupa’da diğeri ABD’de yetişen iki bilim adamına borçludur. Bunlar; İsviçreli dilbilimci Ferdinand de Saussure ile Amerikalı mantıkçı Charles Sanders Peirce’tür. Bu iki değerli âlim, işaret sistemleri, işaretlerin üretilmesi ve yorumlanmasına dair görüşlerini birbirinden habersiz; fakat birbirleriyle eş zamanlı olarak ortaya atmışlardır. Böylece göstergebilimin, bir bilim olarak kuruluş ve gelişim süreci başlamıştır.

Göstergebilim, kuruluşundan hemen sonra, farklı bilimsel disiplinlere inceleme metotları ve terminolojiler vermeye başlamıştır. Edebî, dinî, siyâsî, felsefî metinler başta olmak üzere; her türlü kültürel kodlar, mimari, antropoloji, folklor, iletişim, reklamcılık, sinema, gazetecilik vb. pek çok disiplin, malzemesini göstergebilimin verilerinden hareketle incelemeye başlamıştır. Bu durum göstergebilimin dünyayı daha önce eşi benzeri görülmemiş bir şekilde etkilediğini göstermektedir. Kısaca göstergebilim, dünyada bilimler üstü bir üst bilim konumuna yükselmiştir.

Bütün bu gerçekliklerden hareketle, Türkiye’de ve dünyada göstergebilim alanında mevcut gelişmeleri takip etmek, bu disiplinde çalışan bilim insanlarının araştırmalarından haberdar olmak ve ortak projeler üretmek vb. amaçlarla Balıkesir Göstergebilim Çalıştayı adı altında bir etkinlik düzenledik. Çalıştay; Balıkesir’de kurulu ve başkanlığını yürüttüğüm Anadolu Semiyotik Araştırmaları Derneği ile başkanlığını Prof. Dr. Doğan Günay’ın yürüttüğü Türkiye Göstergebilim Çevresi’nin öncülüğünde, Balıkesir Büyükşehir Belediyesi ile birlikte organize edilmiştir. Ayrıca çalıştayın bilimsel alt yapısının ve içeriğinin oluşturulmasında semiyotik ile ilgili araştırmaları 1960’lı yıllardan beri yönlendiren bir kurum olan International Association For Semiotics Studies/Uluslararası Semiyotik Araştırmaları Derneği ile Asia Association For Semiotics Studies/Asya Semiyotik Araştırmaları Derneği’nin önemli katkıları vardır. Nitekim IASS’ın başkan yardımcıları Prof. Dr. Jose Maria Pas Gago ve Prof. Dr. Massimo Leone ile Asya Semiyotik Araştırmaları Derneği Başkanı Prof. Dr. Sung Do Kim aramızdadır. Kendilerine verdikleri değerli katkılar ve destekleri için teşekkür ediyorum.

Çalıştayımıza en büyük desteği Balıkesir Büyükşehir Belediyesi NeOn Şehir Araştırmaları Merkezi sağlamıştır. Bu sebeple Balıkesir Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanımız sayın Yücel YILMAZ’a samimi teşekkürlerimizi sunmak isterim. Değerli belediye başkanımızın çalışkan ekibi ve desteği olmasaydı; bu çalıştayı gerçekleştiremezdik.

Bizler, bu çalıştayın düzenleyicileri ve katılımcıları olarak, göstergebilimin günümüzde ve gelecekte önemli bir bilim olduğuna inanıyoruz. Şu salondaki manzara, inancımıza sizlerin de ortak olduğunu göstermektedir. Burada bulunan hemen herkes, semiyotiğin insanlığın geleceğine yön vereceği konusunda fikir birliği içindedir. Bu düşünceyi Balıkesir Gülser-Mehmet Bolluk Anadolu Lisesi öğrencileri de fark etti ve çalıştayımıza gönüllü olarak katıldılar. Genç liseli göstergebilimcilerimiz, göstergebilim alanında çığır açmış araştırmacıların kuramlarını, resimleriyle birlikte posterlere taşıyıp, belki de dünyada ilk defa bir göstergebilim sergisi açtılar. Onlar, bu çalıştayın bir bileşeni olmaktan son derece mutlular. Lütfen onlarla yakından ilgileniniz; onlarla konuşunuz; onları dinleyiniz. Onlar; göstergebilimin genç müntesipleridir. Geleceğimiz onların elindedir. Biz de bu ekinliğimizde, onlara elimizden geldiği ölçüde bir yol, bir ufuk açma çabasındayız. Bu mütevazı gayretimizde, davetli konuşmacılarımız başta olmak üzere, bize katkı sağlayan herkese gönülden teşekkür ederim.

Son olarak sizlere, büyük filozof ve mutasavvıf Mevlâna Celalettin Rumî’nin Mesnevi’sinin başlangıç kısmında yer alan ve benim çok anlamlı bulduğum Farsça bir beytini hatırlatmak istiyorum:

Sırr-ı men ez nâle-yi men dûr nîst

Lîk çeşm u gûşrâ ân nûr nîst

Benim sırrım benim feryadımdan uzak değildir.

Lâkin her gözde ve kulakta o sırrı anlayacak nûr yoktur.

Biz bu çalıştay ile Hazreti Mevlana’nın işaret ettiği sırları ve feryadı anlama, yorumlama, duyma ve bu mesajları gelecek nesillere göstergebilimin metotlarıyla aktarmada bir köprü olma gayreti içindeyiz.

Dear Governor, Metropolitan Mayor, deputies, and members of our protocol,

Civilization is built on signs and sign systems. The human mind is inseparable from the operation of signs. This reality has drawn the attention of many great scholars from Aristotle to St Augustin, from Avicenna to John Locke. The idea that civilization depends on signs has gained a new dimension in the last century. During this period, important advances were made both in linguistics and in philosophy and logic. These developments in the humanities led to the birth of new science in the 20th century. This science is semiotics.

Semiotics is a science that examines all factors related to the production and interpretation of signs and the systematic examination of the processes of understanding and interpreting signs. The basis of semiotics goes back to ancient texts. But modern semiotics owes its existence to two scientists, one trained in Europe and the other in the USA. These are the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure and the American logician Charles Sanders Peirce. These two esteemed scholars came up with the views on sign systems, and the production and interpretation of signs; but they were unaware of each other.Thus, the establishment and development process of semiotics as science began.

Semiology, right after its establishment, started to give research methods and terminologies to different scientific disciplines.All kinds of cultural codes, especially literary, religious, political, and philosophical texts; architecture, anthropology, folklore, communication, advertising, cinema, journalism and many other disciplines have started to examine their materials based on the data of semiotics.This shows that semiotics affects the world in an unprecedented way. In short, semiotics has risen to the position of a superscience in the world.

Based on all these realities, we organized an event called the International Semiotics Workshop of Balıkesir to follow the current developments in the field of semiotics in Turkey and in the world, to be informed about the research of scientists working in this discipline, and to produce joint projects.The workshop was organized together with Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, under the leadership of the Anatolian Semiotic Research Association (ANASEM), which was founded in Balıkesir and which I am the president, and the Turkey Semiotics Circle (TSC), headed by Prof Dr. Doğan Günay. In addition, the International Association for Semiotics Studies (IASS) and Asia Association for Semiotics Studies (AASS), an institution that has been guiding semiotics-related research since the 1960s, have made important contributions to the creation of the scientific infrastructure and content of the workshop.As a matter of fact, the vice presidents of IASS Prof. Dr. Jose Maria Pas Gago and Prof. Dr. Massimo Leone and President of the Association for Asian Semiotic Studies Prof. Dr. Sung Do Kim is with us. I thank them for their valuable contributions and support.

Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality NeOn City Research Center provided the greatest support to our workshop. For this reason, I would like to express my sincere thanks to our Mayor of Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, Mr. Yücel YILMAZ. Without the hardworking team and support of our esteemed mayor, we could not hold this workshop. I would also like to thank my dear friend Şükrü KARA, our Deputy Governor of Balıkesir, who has always been with us from the idea stage of our workshop until now and who is the secret hero of the workshop.

Dear Governor, esteemed members of our protocol, esteemed invited speakers,dear participants;

We, as the organizers and participants of this workshop, believe that semiotics is an important science today and in the future. The scene in that hall shows that you share our belief. Almost everyone here agrees that semiotics will shape the future of humanity. Balıkesir Gülser-Mehmet Bolluk Anatolian High School students also noticed this idea and participated in our workshop voluntarily. Our young high school semiotics carried the theories of pioneering researchers in the field of semiotics to posters with their pictures and perhaps opened a semiotics exhibition for the first time in the world. They are very happy to be a component of this workshop. Please take good care of them; talk to them; listen to them. They are the young followers of semiotics. Our future is in their hands. In this event, we are trying to open a way and a horizon for them as much as we can. I sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this modest effort, especially our invited speakers.

Finally, I would like to remind you of a Persian couplet of the great philosopher and mystic Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, which is at the beginning of his Masnavi and which I find very meaningful:

Sırr-ı men ez nâle-yi men dûr nîst

Lîk çeşm u gûşrâ an nûr nîst

My secret is not far from my cry.

However, there is no light in every eye and ear to understand that secret.

With this workshop, we are in an effort to be a bridge in understanding, interpreting and hearing the secrets and outcry pointed out by Mevlâna and conveying these messages to future generations with the methods of semiotics.

Thank you all again for not leaving us alone on this journey by participating in our workshop; I wish the workshop to be beneficial for Balıkesir, our country and humanity.
